Nigel has worked in the nuclear industry for 36 years, having started his career at Dungeness A in Kent - a Magnox station - in 1980 as a maintenance technician. In 1988 Nigel moved to the advanced gas-cooled reactor (AGR) Dungeness B, where he worked his way up through the ranks from electrical supervisor to electrical maintenance engineer. Nigel then moved into operations as a reactor desk engineer, plant engineer, control room supervisor, shift charge engineer and finally assistant operations manager.
In 2001 Nigel took on his first managerial role as outage manager before going on to roles as assistant operations manager, maintenance manager and plant manager, moving on to the same role at Sizewell B at the beginning of 2007.
Nigel has a number of engineering qualifications including a BEng (Hons) Degree in Energy Engineering and a HNC in Electrical Engineering, as well as holding emergency controller status during his time at Dungeness B. He has also represented EDF Energy (British Energy as it was known then) and the UK nuclear industry at both WANO (World Association of Nuclear Operators) and INPO (Institute of Nuclear Power Operators) seminars and reviews across the world. Nigel attended the INPO plant manager’s course in 2007.
Nigel became station director at Hinkley Point B in February 2007, a post which he held for 4 years. In April 2011 he took up the role of Hinkley C Site construction director. In January 2016, Nigel became the Delivery Director for the HPC Project.
During his time in leadership positions Nigel has led EDF Energy fleet initiatives in training, maintenance and work management as well as leading several key fleet turn around projects. Outside of work he has taken up the role of trustee of the Bridgwater Trust an organisation trying to take some local schools to academy status with the mantra of trying to take local children to work ready status. Nigel has been involved in key Trade Union negotiations and was instrumental in delivering the landmark Project Agreements to be used during the construction of Hinkley Point C. During his time as site construction director, Nigel has input to the DCO for the Project and achieved the Nuclear Site Licence for the construction site
